Flowering in captivity
8th April 2011
Four years ago, Forest Research set up a small trial to see if it might be possible to coax Aspen to flower in a seed orchard. They grafted a small number of trees onto rootstock, and grew them on in containers in a polytunnel. In March, three of the seven clones produced a few catkins.
Highland Aspen Group also set up a larger scale trial at their nursery in Kincraig. A few catkins appeared on 2 clones this spring.

Hopefully it will not be too long before Aspen trees become more readily available from nurseries.
