Over the last two decades, interest in Aspen has been steadily gathering momentum in Scotland. We are discovering Aspen's importance for biodiversity, and many foresters are keen to explore its potential in commercial forests.
A number of field surveys, research projects and conferences have helped improve our understanding of Aspen. Several nurseries are now propagating local origin Aspen.
The Aspen 2020 Project is helping to gather and share information about Aspen, and to encourage land-holders to manage and plant more Aspen woodlands throughout Scotland.
The Project’s main objectives are:
> to improve our knowledge of Aspen distribution and status
> to help gather and share knowledge on Aspen ecology and management
> to restore and expand Aspen woodlands
> to improve the availability of local origin Aspen for planting
